#372949 What's the Anomen romance like?

Posted by Klorox on 22 January 2008 - 07:21 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

I just finished ToB while romancing Anomen yesterday.

The romance was "eh", but I liked the character development side.

#372950 What's your ultimate, completely legal, power party (BGII)?

Posted by Klorox on 22 January 2008 - 07:24 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

I just finished ToB with an ass-kickin' party:

Berserker 13 > Mage protagonist (GM in Axes and Hammers, dual wielding)
Anomen (GM Flails, dual wielding)
Sarevok (GM in Greatswords and Halberds)
Imoen

It was overpowered when I un-nerfed the grandmastery, so I uninstalled that component.

since it was only 3 characters, I had maxed out my XP for Imoen, Anomen, and protagonist in Watcher's Keep.

#373136 How fast do the characters move?

Remind me about this game:

Do they move at the speed of BGI or BGII characters?

TIA

#373137 IWD w/ HoW & TotLM: which patches?

Posted by Klorox on 23 January 2008 - 04:47 AM in Icewind Dale Series

Do I need both the HoW (v1.41) AND IWD (v1.06) patches, or only one of them?

Any recommended mods/tweaks/fixes, ect.?

TIA

#373162 How fast do the characters move?

I believe that my answer still stands except the BgConfig.exe is IDConfig.exe . But what exactly are you looking out for, and what's the difference between BG1 and BG2?

I'm not looking for a number or anything. Just a rough idea.

In BGI, characters move too slow for my taste. BGII they move nice and swift.

I'm hoping IWDI is like BGII.

#373163 IWD w/ HoW & TotLM: which patches?

Posted by Klorox on 23 January 2008 - 07:33 AM in Icewind Dale Series

Patch IWD with 1.06, patch HoW with 1.41 than install TotL which includes patch 1.42.

Auril's Bane is a good mod.

Weird. On another board I was told that otLM has the patches for the earlier versions already.

Crap!

Well, I don't know much about cache size or whatever dictating the walking speeds, but with a clean install of both BGI and BGII, it's quite evident in my experience that the characters move much slower in BGI.

This is without tutu or any mods, btw.

Awesome. Thanks so much, to both of you.

Daulmakan, how can I get to the Houses of the Holy? :D

#373232 Please evaluate my new party:

Posted by Klorox on 23 January 2008 - 03:37 PM in Icewind Dale Series

Hi everybody. I've decided to give another go at IWD1, HoW, TotLM after a few years away from it. I've discovered that I really enjoy 4 person parties the best, as they level up a bit faster than full ones while not taking away from the challenge of the game, but most importantly, it's just easier for me to keep track of these guys!

Character 1: CG Gnome Fighter/Thief
He'll be wearing heavy armor most of the time (and will remove it to disarm traps). I'm using this guy as a tank.

Character 2: LN Half-Elf Fighter/Mage/Cleric
He'll be wearing heavy armor for the early stages of the game, at least until I feel like he has some good arcane spells to contribute to the party. After that, I'm hoping for some Elven Chain so that he'll still be decent as a tank.

Character 3: NE Half-Elf Bard
I am in love with their songs! He will act as an archer before level 11, and also as my mage for the early stages of the game. I'm hoping for another suit of Elven Chain for this guy, so I know I'm kinda pushing my luck there (I don't like reloading random treasures).

Character 4: N Fighter/Druid type. I'm not sure if I should multiclass or dualclass this one. I can see advantages to both:

F/D multiclass:

All abilities the whole game
30/30 maximum level
Better THAC0
No "weak" period of development

F9>D dualclass

***** in Scimitar
More HP
***** in Scimitar

Seriously though, which is a better character? Please keep in mind that I'll be playing with a 4 character party, so my levels will jump up a bit faster than a 6 man party.

Any suggestions on weapon proficiencies is greatly appreciated, as are comments about the party.

TIA!

2 is my favorite album, but it's always nice to see a Zep fan! :)

#373314 Please evaluate my new party:

Posted by Klorox on 24 January 2008 - 04:40 AM in Icewind Dale Series

Thanks guys.  Ideally, I'd like my F/D to be able to fill both roles: fighter when needed, and a great spellcaster.  If I go dual class, I'll probably dual at Fighter level 9.

... waiting a few months and playing IWD NPC is a good idea, too. But then, you can always play the game twice, so. :)

Oh yeah!  Anything to add even more flavor to this game is great, and I'll definitely give IWDNPC a shot.

Anyway, what do y'all think of the actual party itself?  Is it balanced and powerful enough to handle IWD/HoW/TotLM?

What happens when you take the liquid to Thalantyr?

#373949 (IWD1)Shapeshifting abilities of the Druid

Anyplace where I can view the details/stats of each of the forms a Druid can shapeshift into?

TIA

#374293 IWD1: HoF mode from the beginning

Posted by Klorox on 30 January 2008 - 05:22 AM in Icewind Dale Series

I'm going to give it a try, and I'm brainstorming party ideas now. here's what I've got so far:

Gnome Fighter (GM in Axes for a great AC and using the boomerang axe)

Half-Elf Cleric/Ranger

Half-Elf Fighter/Druid

Elf Fighter/Mage/Thief (basically, I'm using him as an archer who can open locks and disarm traps. Since he'll always be in the back-row, I figured he doesn't really need armor so why not throw some spellcasting ability in there as well?)

Gnome Fighter/Illusionist

Half-Elf Bard

I'm not too sure on where to allocate weapon proficiencies (other than maxing out ranged weapons for all characters ASAP).

I also know that Paladins are usually pointed at as being great for HoF mode, but I think that's because of being able to cast "Prot. from Evil" on themselves so often. I figure a single classed Gnome fighter can wear that gnome/halfling helmet for a better AC bonus, and can also be a more offensive character since he can get GM in a few weapons.

This is still in it's planning stage, so I'd really welcome comments/ideas/criticisms. TIA

#374460 IWD1: HoF mode from the beginning

Posted by Klorox on 31 January 2008 - 06:32 AM in Icewind Dale Series

I've decided to make one change so far. Instead of the Gnome Fighter, I'm plugging in a Gnome Fighter/Thief. I'll still use him as a tank(fully armored), but I think the slightly lower HP and lack of GM in any weapon is far outeweighed by the evasion ability he'll gain. I've come to realize that in HoF, you'll (need to) do a lot more damage with spells than weapons, so losing GM isn't that big of a deal. Besides, since this will allow him to gain specialization in more weapons, it opens up his versatility. I'll be using the Long Sword of Action +4 when I get it instead of an inferior Axe.

#374678 IWD1: HoF mode from the beginning

Posted by Klorox on 01 February 2008 - 07:59 AM in Icewind Dale Series

Eh, I've decided to make a few changes, but first let me say that I don't want to mess with the GM rules, because I believe that single-classed Fighters really deserve a special benefit nobody else gets.

Jarno: I'm going with a F/M/T over a M/T for a few reasons:

1)I can use a Composite Long Bow (soooo much better than any other missile weapons)
2)I want everybody (except the Bard, of course) to be able to get ** in a missile weapon. 90% of my physical attacks are with missile weapons.
3)In my experience, it's hard to get the highest level scrolls for your spellcasters at any stage in this game (meaning that I usually have my highest level spell slots either empty or with spells I really don't like). On HoF mode (with all it's XP), I figure this problem will be compounded. I also have a F/Ill and a Bard, so scrolls will be scarce.
4)I've always hated the C/M, especially in IWD. I like splitting the classes up because I don't like having to choose which spell I need. Having a F/C and a F/M instead of a C/M means that I can cast more spells in a round (a C/M may have twice as many spells, but can only loose one of them every round).

I've decided to go with the following party:

1)Human Paladin. Great tank here, with DuHM, Prot. from Evil, great saves, and Laying on Hands ability should be a lifesaver with it's quick casting time when things get hairy in HoF melee.
2)Elf FMT. In addition to what I said above, I want to add a few things: I plan on using this character as an archer for most of the game(Elf is perfect). He's a Thief so that I can open locks and disarm traps (being triple classed won't hurt those abilities). The spellcasting is just thrown in there to have another person to cast low level spells like Charm Person and Chromatic Orb.
3)1/2 Elf C/R. I'll take the slightly slower Ranger level advancement over a F/C for the Charm Animal ability, some Druid spells (sunscorch is GREAT in HoF, and the more Entangles the better!), and the ability to be used as a Scout as the situation warrants.
4)1/2 Elf F/D. Druids are awesome in this game, and when she can shapeshift into a water elemental, she's nigh-invulnerable! ;)
5)Gnome F/Ill. Great spellcaster, and can shoot that bow great as well. I had considered an elf F/M instead, but decided with 2 other spellcasters, having a specialist mage is more beneficial to the party. It's nice to have a short guy in there too! :D
6)1/2 Elf Bard. Singing, and throwing a spell out there every once in a while (buffing spells will be good with her too, since they can be cast outside of combat, and with her very high spellcaster level should last a looooong time). I don't expect her to have hardly any kills in this game, but that's not what she's there for.

#374681 HoF: Which spells are useless?

Posted by Klorox on 01 February 2008 - 08:00 AM in Icewind Dale Series

I don't know if certain spells will work in HoF mode. Sleep hasn't worked for me (it's based on Hit Die), and I'm wondering about Horror.

Any spells I should just avoid in a pure HoF game?

TIA

#374704 BGIII

Posted by Klorox on 01 February 2008 - 11:24 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

If a BGIII were ever made, I think it'd be really cool if you joined up with Gorion (or played him) and the final mission were to save the Bhaalspawn from a temple of Bhaal where s/he is to be sacrificed.

#375020 IWD1: HoF mode from the beginning

Posted by Klorox on 04 February 2008 - 04:12 AM in Icewind Dale Series

Having never tried this, I can't believe how tough it has been! I just made it into Khuldahar, and boy was it difficult (and I skipped going north of the tower for that goblin fight... I'll revisit it after buying plate mail for all of my tanks)!

I tried a couple of tricks, like starting the game with only the multiclassed characters (for the bugs in the basement and drunk man quests), then added the paladin (with her 18 CHA) to kill the wolf in the shop. Then I finally added the Bard for the rest of the prologue. I figure the multiclassers need as much help with XP as possible, and I remember being bored with my Bard level-ups after he reached level 11 last time I played (which was a few years ago).

I'm getting so much use out of the spells charm person and entangle. For some reason, my "charm person or mammal" druid spell never works (weird, I wonder why that is). Once I got "Call Lightning" and "Animate Dead" the game started getting easier.

#375021 IWD1: What do the different Bard songs actually do?

Posted by Klorox on 04 February 2008 - 04:16 AM in Icewind Dale Series

I try reading the ingame descriptions of two songs that confuse me.  First is the level 1 song (I can't remember the name).  The first song says that it "increases combat effectiveness" or something along that lines.  The level 5 (or is it 6?) song, Tymora's Melody increases luck.

I have no idea what these two songs actually do, in the game though.

If my Bard is going to be singing, which song is more effective?

TIA

#375154 How fast do the characters move?

Posted by Klorox on 05 February 2008 - 04:51 AM in Icewind Dale Series

The difference can also be because the animation files are made with a different index in mind, so that BGI take longer, because they show smaller increments of change(not from a pixel to pixel, but also between them). And in theory at least the animations in IwD should be tuned to exactly to same as BGII, as it uses some of the same files.

As a side note, what's the verdict Klorox, is it alike BGI, or BGII.

It's like BGII. But I only tried with HoW and TotLM installed.

#375155 Looking for a great BGII challenge.

Posted by Klorox on 05 February 2008 - 05:01 AM in Baldur's Gate Series

Am I better off installing something like Improved Anvil, or going for Ascension/ Tactics/ Item Upgrade (insert mods here)?

TIA

Wow, thanks for the quick and very informative response.  I've got some reading to do! :)

#375232 IWD1: What do the different Bard songs actually do?

Posted by Klorox on 05 February 2008 - 02:04 PM in Icewind Dale Series

Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately, the description for the Tymora song is:

allies gain +1 Luck, +3 saving throws, +10% to lore and thief skills.

I still don't know what Luck does.
