Remember a while ago, we were talking about some of the colors crashing the game? Does anyone remember which colors those were?

I think this is the closest I've ever seen:

Yeah, some of the colors over 78 or 79 are unstable and cause crashing.

...I think it's mostly random. Or at least semi-random. Some colours crash the game for some people, but not for everybody. Some colours seem to occasionally crash the game for some people.

I'm just going to guess here, but it looks like there's a risk, if not a very big one, with anything that isn't actually on the in-game list of colours to choose from. (Which sucks.) It also seems it's more likely to crash if applied to the PC - several NPCs use non-standard colours, but I've never heard of anyone having problems with those.

[edit] I think it's more likely to get proper answers here.

115 is confirmed as working on my system; I haven't had a crash problem with anything lower, either.

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

I don't mind doing a little bit of research on this, in spare moments when I'm too tired to mod. I really like the pretty colors. This is what I've got so far, through research of BG and BG2 creature files. These are confirmed working. Numbers up to 67 are presumed working.

Yes, I know all this info is in the IESDP, but here it's presented to show which colors are working and where.

As part of the color testing process, I found out that leather color might not be represented in red by the diagram above. I'm attaching a screen shot, and the tp2 code I used to set the colors.

The creature I summoned was b!met00.cre.

Never mind. I begin to suspect that Edwin has his own animation. I'm going to try again with a new CRE.

...interesting. It's not just leather, either - it seems to be the minor details as well.

What happens if you use a dye on those parts on that .cre?

Ah, remembered something. I'm about 98.4% certain that I have experienced trouble -more than once- with the "42h/66, Faded Black" colour (which I have mostly, IIRC, used as "leather" - the main reason why I made Rupert to begin with was because I don't like the standard poopy-brown boot colour).

Dunno. I've got a very stripped-down "testing" installation, with nothing but the patch and the BG2 Fixpack. I'm working on a couple mods that are in the testing stage, and I didn't want to muck about with mod interferance.

I'm trying it again using a cloned Rayic Gaetheras as the source creature, because I'm 94.2% sure that it uses just a basic mage animation, maybe with a nice robe.

It might be interesting to note that summoning b!coltest.cre in the example above crashed the game, but summoning b!met05.cre did not, which has the same color assignments as b!coltest.cre.

Oops, my bad. It wasn't the leather color I was supposed to be changing, it was the metal color. In any case, the apron on the robe remains red, and the trim details remain gold, despite the fact that all colors are changed to light silver.

On the mage animation in that robe, changing the metal color seems to have no effect on the sprite. I checked all 116 colors.

This might be animation specific. I've been through all 116 metal colors on the male mage animation, and it's had no effect on the animation whatsoever. I've been through all 116 minor colors and all 116 major colors, and the robe colors have changed accordingly. None of the 116 possible skin colors crashed the game, nor did any of the 116 possible leather colors, 116 possible armor colors, or 116 possible hair colors. The leather colors and armor colors had no effect on the in-game animation. In the following screenshots, the areas represented show up in bright green. The difference between major and minor colors should be obvious, as should the differences between the skin colors and hair colors. The screenshot with no apparent fluorescent green coloring is the leather color experiment.

So, for a human male mage wearing the robe of the archmagi, no colors produced CTD.

I'm also including a screenshot of the assembled creatures with 116 different face colors.

Base creature: JUGJER01 (Jermien)
Animation: MAGE MALE HUMAN
Robe: CLCK17 (robe of evil archmagi - yeah, I knew he's LN, but I knew the robe was colorful)

After this series, I'll try a different base creature, possibly a male human fighter (without armor)

Very, very weird. I'm going to have to blame the code you're using to change them. These obviously aren't doing what they're supposed to-

WRITE_BYTE 0x30 05 //leather color (light silver)
WRITE_BYTE 0x31 05 //armor color (light silver)

0000000.png

I have purple and gold as what's listed as "Armor colour (and major triming on robe - cross trim and cape trim on robe of archmagi)" and "Belt Buckle (on armor) or amulets (on robes)" in DLTCEP on the bottom. (I think "metal" would be the second one of those?) And on top, I'm obviously able to change everything on that avatar - changing the "leather" colour definitely has an effect on the mage avatar. And it should definitely be the correct "leather" location, as well. I've checked it like a million times.

...I should think more about this, but it's late and I really want some sleep.

It occurs to me that you're looking at the paperdolls, while I'm looking at the in-game animations. There is likely a big difference.

Never mind. I see you've got screen shots there. Now I wonder if there's a difference between setting it as a spell and setting it as part of the tp2. Checking the game CREs with DLTCEP shows the colors assigned properly.

I'm looking at this as somebody who wants to change the colors on the sprites, not necessarily the paperdolls. For a non-joinable spellcaster, I don't really care what the paperdoll looks like. I'm just interested in having a different-looking sprite and not crashing the game when it spawns.

Made another little experiment. I used an unarmored male human fighter animation, but forgot to take the mage robe off. None of the colors crashed the game in any location.

Here's a group picture screenshot, with fluorescent green in the following locations (left to right): metal, minor color, skin, major color, hair, leather, armor. The dead guy has fluorescent green in his metal location.

I'm also attaching the tp2 I used for that last lot.

In any case, the apron on the robe remains red, and the trim details remain gold, despite the fact that all colors are changed to light silver.

Yeah, I noticed there is at least one element you can't change with the known colour assignments, maybe two. FWIW, there is at least one "unknown" at 0x2a, maybe another at 0x2b. But I assume the people who did the IESDP etc. did pretty rigorous testing to figure they were unknown, but you never know.

It might be interesting to note that summoning b!coltest.cre in the example above crashed the game, but summoning b!met05.cre did not, which has the same color assignments as b!coltest.cre.

But I thought you used different assignments (black vs. light silver or whatever) and different elements.

Robe: CLCK17 (robe of evil archmagi - yeah, I knew he's LN, but I knew the robe was colorful)

Oh. Well that explains it, doesn't it? The robe overrides whatever colours you're assigning to the CRE while its alive since it has "while equipped" effects of "pure dark red" for the minor trim, "light minty blue" for the belt buckle (may or may not be noticeable) and "dark pure gold" for the major trim.

[P.S. Maybe a moderator wants to move the recent posts from the Rupert topic as they're more related to this one.]

Yeah, I was just thinking that it was the robe. I was going to finish playing with the fighter animation, then move on to some other fancy mage robe. Adventurer's robe? I'll see if I've got wa2robe available.

All the robes mod those same palette entries, and pretty much the same way (kinda stupid if you ask me - maybe someone should make a shop with different coloured robes). You could try giving him Gorion's undroppable Knave's Robe (clck18) which doesn't look like it has any such effects.

Ah. Then I won't bother with any of the robes at all. But at least now I understand why the dyes work whereas setting them with the tp2 doesn't: the dye overrides the "while equipped" effects.

And have another group photo.

Interestin'... I wouldn't think it'd be able to do this. Does this persist after you remove and re-equip the item? (I'm wondering if it is this that causes erratic crashes, and not any particular known colours.)

And have another group photo.

So are you just changing colours on one particular location and so far most of them work?

After testing every color in every possible place, I can say that none of the colors crash the game in any location. I have no idea why Shadowkeeper crashes when you assign a color over a certain number, but every single fighter animation with every single color assignment spawned just fine.

If you're curious, this shot has fighter color locations, from left to right: metal, major, skin, minor, leather, hair, armor.

Probably. I was testing on a bare-bones install just to rule out contribution from any other mod.

So are you just changing colours on one particular location and so far most of them work?

First I created a creature that had a stable color for all locations, 05 light silver. Then I copied it 812 times to different creatures with 812 different names, so that if it crashed, I'd know which color and which location was responsible. Then I spawned each of the 813 creatures (812 "color" creatures plus the base creature) individually with the CLUAConsole with the game unpaused, waiting to see what crashed. That's how I wound up with the formation pictures.
