I know what the best pair of NPC's would be; *drum roll* Noober and Neeber. They'll bore the pants off any enemies that come their way but you will probably kill or deafen yourself first!

I always found Tiax entertaining. Better with some beefier stats (they're beefed up for several NPC's anyway). It would nice to finally see him achieve world domination after all.
One of those Knights of Solamnia (like Reyna) from the Planar Sphere would rock. I remember the first time I went through the game, I thought one would end up being joinable.

I made Neeber into a PC once. Very amusing (for me at least)! I made a sound set for him too, out of his dialogue and maybe some of Noober's too (can't remember exactly).
