Rupert the Dye merchant has been updated and is now available with macOS and Linux support.

Version 3.0.0 is BG2, ToB, BG Tutu, BGT, BG:EE, SoD, BG2:EE and EET compatible, and includes new French and Russian translations, as well as a restored German translation.

This mod adds a new merchant who sells various dyes and new outfits.

Dyes work like potions. These can be used by anyone, and will permanently change the user's colours as specified by the particular dye: there are separate options for major and minor colours, leather (belts/boots/straps), armour, decorative items (like belt buckles/amulets) and hair.

Outfits will change the character's appearance to match the specified class: fighter, mage, thief or cleric. (I strongly suggested that you also install everything from One Pixel Productions) These can be used by anyone but monks (which would look wonky). Halflings have no mage avatars and will use the gnome mage avatar instead. Half-Orcs have no mage paperdolls in the un-modded game, meaning you won't see your character on the inventory screen (unless you install the 1PP update, which adds one).

All changes are purely cosmetic; you do not gain or lose abilities by using anything bought from Rupert's stores.

Rupert will appear in the Mithrest Inn in BG2:SoA, as well as in Saradush and Amkethran inns if Throne of Bhaal is installed. In BG:EE, SoD, TuTu, BGT and EET, he will also appear in a room on the second floor of the Friendly Arm Inn (the second from the left on the top-left side of the screen).

Examples of what you can do with Rupert's stuff:

Change log:

  • Added rupert.ini metadata file to support AL|EN's "Project Infinity".
  • Renamed setup-rupert.tp2 -> rupert.tp2 to support AL|EN's "Project Infinity".
  • Replaced `AUTHOR` keyword with `SUPPORT`.
  • Added `HANDLE_CHARSETS` function to convert string entries for EE games.
  • Added `REQUIRE_PREDICATE` process to avoid installing the mod in inaccurate games.
  • Added component `DESIGNATED` number and "rupert_the_dye_merchant" `LABEL`.
  • Added native BG:EE, BG2:EE and EET compatibility.
  • Commented code as much as possible.
  • Rewrote store patching process.
  • Simplified Rupert spawning and script `EXTEND_TOP` process with cross-platforms tutu variables.
  • Converted inventory BAMs to EE: This feature attempts to modify traditional inventory BAMs so that both the large and small icons are utilized by the EE games. The inventory BAM must have two sequences, the first containing the "large" inventory icon frame and the second containing the "small" inventory icon frame to be processed. Inventory icon BAMs in the bam folder that meet these requirements are patched and saved back to the override folder.
  • Included BWP Fixpack patch: fixed wrong header icons.
  • Added foreign languages WeiDU prompts whenever possible.
  • Added French translation (by Gwendolyne).
  • Added Russian translation (BWP Russian Textpack team).
  • Restored German translation.
  • Fixed typos in English .tra files.
  • Reformatted, updated and renamed readme file to "rupert-readme-english.html" readme, then moved it into new "readme" folder.
  • Removed useless files and "backup" folder
  • Reorganized mod architecture tree: created folders to sort files according to their types.
  • Lower cased files.
  • Included Linux and Mac Os X versions in the same package (thanks AL|EN's Infinity Auto Packager tool!).
  • Added archive libiconv-1.9.2-1-src.7z with iconv licence info.
  • Updated WeiDU installer to v246.
  • Uploaded mod to official Spellhold Studios GitHub mirror account.

Put him in either Ribalds shop or the CC.

Why not the Promenade - seems logical enough, next to the other 'niche' merchants there.

For BGT/Tutu, I guess the FAI or Beregost would be most perfect.

Excellent idea for a mod!

In Tutu, you could put him in the courtyard of the FAI. He's been traveling a while, but he's holing up at the FAI for a while because bandit activity has made traveling unsafe.

In Athkatla, I think he'd fit in somewhere in the Bridge district, or on the top tier of Waukeen's Promenade, above Galoomp.

I love this idea. I have my game crash so often when I try to change the colors of clothing.. who knows why.. and this will take care of that.

Have I mentioned I love this?

If he can be spawned in the BG1 section of BGT as well... I will doubly love this and will humbly offer a month of servitude.

In a moment of abject silliness, I just conceived the idea to make Rupert female, name her Claire Awl, and give her a rather formal personality. Then she could refuse to answer to anything but Miss Claire Awl. :whistling:

Maybe I should see if this condition is treatable.

It must be contageous, I think I caught it.

Will she mention how her dyes are an organic experience?

Glad someone ran with this idea. I had it on my to-do list, but it was so far down, I probably would've never gotten around to it. :D

Glad you people like it, it was a total pain to create 115 bams for this thing.

FAI would be a good place for him in Tutu - it fits, and you get there early.

In BG2, I think it'll be best to put him as close to the beginning as possible - the Mithrest or Seven Vales. The Copper Coronet is kinda full of important NPCs and plots already, and it's a little low-class for someone like Rupert. :P

Possibly I might also put him somewhere in the inns at Saradush and Amkethran in ToB, for convenience.

I think the Claire Awl thing is a reference to something that doesn't exist in my little corner of the world. Eh?

Miss Clairol is a brand of hair care producs that includes shampoos, hair dye, and home perm kits. They used to run TV commercials in the US that featured an attractive female enjoying having her hair washed far more than you'd expect. Her pleasure was attributed to the product bestowing an organic experience.

The Friendly Arm is good for Tutu. I'd suggest outdoors on the main map rather than inside the inn. For one thing it's used in several other mods; for another, medieval dyeing was a smelly (and sometimes dangerous) job that was best conducted outdoors. ;) There's a spot around 2500,2640 (FW2300) that looks like an abandoned stable (no horses) so it could easily be a dyer's workshop.

Even if it does, I'm afraid the game won't allow bathing for the ladies.

I think the Flirtpack allows bathing with the ladies (well, some of them anyway), if that helps.

Descriptive action text only takes you so far, though...
