Hi all :)

We have a discussion recently about how did those little critters are pronounced: is it kObold or kobOld? Discusion dies out eventually as no side were able to present firm facts in favour of his theory. But still I'm curious, if there's any handbook, manual, anything, which clearly shows which syllable should be stressed while pronouncing "kobold"?
I checked some of 1st ed. D&D materials (didn't get my hand on AD&D pdfs yet) and internet sources like Wiki on kobolds to no avail :(

Well, my dictionary, as well as a sound from somewhere in BG1 I think, are both in favor of kObold ;)

Seconded. kObold is how I've always pronounced it.

Back from the brink.

Like RPGs? Like Star Wars? Think combining the two would be fun? Read Darths and Droids, and discover the line "Jar Jar, you're a genius".

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

Koe-bald, is how I've always done it.

Well, according to the American HeritageŽ Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000, the correct pronunciation of Kobold is similar to the word Cobalt, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

So, it seems that I lose that argue. It's kinda sad actually, as I get accustomed to my kobOlds over the ages of misspelling them and will definitely miss them :crying:
At least now I know the truth. Thank you for an answers folk :)

Well, don't underestimate how far one could go while at the brink of losing bar of chocolate as a bet in an argue ;)
Seriously, my break from BG modding doesn't mean that I harbour any hard feelings towards such great (and helpful) community :)

Heh, I often pronounce creature names as they are written (well, not all of them, I certainly don't say drAAgon). I think it's the first O, but I ususally pronounce them both equally ^_^

Huh, I've tended to pronounce it with a short "o" in, and the emphasis on, the first syllable, particularing in reference to Koboldling. O.o

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard
