I cannot initiate a conversation with Ferthgil Trollslayer, it just states that appears busy.  Ferthgil Trollslayer keeps repeating that his axe is restless and needing something to kill over and over.  I have seen mention  on other sites that getting him to join is an issue and they mention, but do not link, that there is patch for it.  I have not been able to locate such a patch, are you aware of this patch and/ or issue?

Thank you in advance for your time

I have not heard of this, but can you post the contents of your WeiDU.log file for starters.

The fact that his starting dialog did not have an option to hand over the quest item he is carrying without having him join always made me getting him killed... by the opponents or my accidental fireballs. I found it highly irritating to play this huge combat dungeon with 1 or more free party slots just to pick him up.

When do you run into this, upon meeting him or when he's in party later?

If I remember correctly, I did get a dialogue option when I entered the room, but the fight - which is large - was already underway when the conversation began.  I opted not to have him join because whomever I would kick out had a lot of really good gear that I would want to strip him/her of.  Now all that battle is done and I've completed all aspects of the quest except having the hammer, which he has.  I would not min playing that character in the party but that is the only talking/ conversation option - if you can call it an option - that I get.,

It's basically the same problem. You can pickpocket the quest item from him or kill him, overall a big design flaw... similar problems as with Drizzt Saga (need to have no party to pick up every NPC during the saga) and partially Region of Terror which also requires party slots.

As requested here is the entries from the log file...

Wait a second... isn't Ferthgil a DSotSC NPC? I don't see that in your log; did you uninstall it or something?

Is that part off the Dark Horizons?  No, I have not uninstalled anything

Is this still bugged??

I was just playing this in EET with last DSotSC 4.1

As I enter, Ferthgil Trollslayer introduces himself.

 Baldr001.jpg

Shortly after that, while the battle is still going on, he tells me this.

Baldr002.jpg

Skipping a bit forward, there is option (1.) to join him to the party OR (2.) to tell him off..

Baldr003.jpg

So, after telling him he is on his own, he runs out and disappears.

After that, I cleaned all the levels on my way out, but there was no Ferthgil Trollslayer anymore and most importantly no "Giant Feller" warhammer anywhere.

I went back to Otho but the quest was not finished, as I didn't have his nephews's warhammer.

Is there something I overlooked? I though that since there was an option to send Trollslayer away, I could complete the quest by some other route..

Yes, apparently, that's how the quest goes in all versions of DSotSC (oBG1/EE and Trilogy). If Ferthgil isn't allowed in the party, the quest remains incompletable. The solution I would suggest is to mark the hammer as a critical item, so that it gets handed over in the party composition screen, when he attempts to join but rejected.
