Hello!

Can any of you tell me how the weapon proficiency system works in Baldur's Gate for Dual Class and Multi Class ?

I am interested in the number of points I get at startup with a multiclass and how its advancement is determined.

Also I would like to know how a Dual Class integrates "old" and "new" proficiencies acquired during the old profession.

Thanks a lot!

Unless you have the Tweak Pack, only fighters and their kits (including barbarians I believe) can put more than 2 points in proficiencies. Paladins, rangers and multi-fighters can put 2 points. All other classes/kits can put 1 point, unless given an advantage or restriction for specific proficiencies.

A dual-class character can assign proficiencies in whatever class he is at the time. The main thing to avoid here is redundant allocation. In other words, if you put a couple slots in short sword as a fighter, then dualed to a thief and put another slot in it, you would still have only 2 slots in short sword upon becoming a fighter/thief. You do not have the proficiencies of the old class available until surpassing with the new class (this goes for all dual-class abilities).

A multi-classed character starts with the largest number of proficiency slots of his different classes. Thereafter, he gains new proficiency slots at the fastest of the given rates. In other words, basically a F/M/T gets the proficiencies of a fighter - with the restriction noted above.

Thanks, Miloch!

It's what I also suspected but I wanted to be sure that the engine followed the P&P rules which are exactly what you described!

Barbarians can only put 2 points in proficiencies.

A dual-class character can assign proficiencies in whatever class he is at the time.

Yes, but once the first class is active again, he can assign proficiencies in all proficiencies he would get if he were multiclassed, but if he is a fighter dualled to something else, he can go to 5 points even after being dualled to another class, once the fighter class is active again.

Garrh! You're right there - I should've known that. No way should Khalid be able to wield a bastard sword better than I can! Guess I'll have to make that barbarian/thief kit I've been bandying about...
