I've just started a new BG1Tutu game ... I'm playing as a Kensai. I just have to ask ... are Kensais wildly unbalanced? I seem to be able to hack down basically anything in my path. I'm Level 5 and doing around 20-30 damage average on my hits, which make contact quite often. Have I done something wrong, installed some mod which is making me overpowered? Or are Kensais just really that badass?

Would you consider playing a Kensai to be too easy? Is it tantamount to cheating?

Well, my average damage was 19 +/- 3 on normal hits and about 38 with critical. (that's with 18/00 in Str and Bastard sword+1 on 5 level Kensai)
So most likely you weren't cheating at least...
But the balance has never been the strong point of the Kensai, he has no armor, so if you don't carry a league of healers, you'll end up dead. And the archers are going to kill you, as you have nothing to reply to it in BGI.

Edit, might Minsc have been right when he yelled; "The bigger they are, the harder I hit", as the above was against Ankhegs, and when I tried against Ghasts etc. small creatures, the damage was about 13 or so. <_<

Yes, they are a bit overpowered in the long term, specially if appropiately equipped and developed. Huge overpowered if dualled to mage or thieve at level 9+. But of course, dual classing in BG saga should be forbidden or strongly nerfed, IMHO.
Where men gather, a bustle of chaos ensues. I would save them all, if I could.

Well, BG1 didn't have kits, so yeah, a lot of them are a bit overpowered in the setting.

Lots of them are a bit underpowered, as well.. the sorcerer, for example, has a huuuuge disadvantage against the mage because of the slower spell learning rate.

But yes. I love kensais. My typical Bhaalspawn is one.

I find a Kensai to be incredibly powerful in BG1, but only if used properly. My current one can land blows of 20+ points damage time and again, but if I do nothing to protect him, he falls quite easily. Put him against most foes you meet and he'd slaughter them 1 v 1, but a group of gibberlings can overwhelm him...well, they could in the earlier stages anyway. :)

I agree with Sir_Carnifex. My kensai can easily smack around most things, as long as she hits the enemy thing first. A lucky wolf can easily kill her at level 1 with a critical hit, but on the other hand, she can kill it just as easily, so..

In Warhammer, I would say that Initiative, ie landing the first blow, plays a very important part in this.
