I loaded your saved game and went into Beregost without problem on a vanilla EasyTutu installation, so I think it may be a mod causing the problem. Could you post the textual contents of your WeiDU.log? Thanks for waiting.

Question: Will this happen if you leave Beregost? Here's what happened:

I started the game and it worked fine. When I tried to enter Beregost for the first time, it crashed on the loading screen. It then crashed every time I tried to enter any other location (I started a new game and tried to go from the starting area to the forest and it crashed every time). I reinstalled the game and it worked fine. I went to Beregost, left Beregost, tried to go back to the starting area to get something I forgot, and after I Inserted disk 1 again, it gave me a runtime error.

The BG tech support forums helped me fix that pretty easily, but now I'm back to the crashing on every load screen problem.

Note: It does NOT prevent me from loading my game, just new maps.

I tried using this program on my save file, but this happens:
File C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate\save0000000-Auto-Save\BALDUR.SAV is invalid (unable to load file)

Disregard, it's not a problem with the loading so much as the saving, it crashes every time I do, even with the auto-save while switching maps.

A compatibility problem between a virus/trojan/spyware program running in the background and BG2 perhaps?

The only suspicious process I was able to find was csrss.exe, and when I try to end it, it blue screens me, so I'm assuming it's legit.

I'll run a virus scan.

I'll run a virus scan.

Virus scan turned up nothing, it said on the microsoft information page that 2 csrss.exe running at the same time (which I have when I bring up "tasks running by all users" in my task manager) means that one is a virus. So I did a HJT log and didn't find anything too suspicious, but I only did a google search of things I wasn't sure on, you can take a look if you want:

No, no, I didn't mean that you had some malware. What I meant is that one of your background programs may be interfering with the game.

On Vista make sure you run the program as an administrator. Before I did that saving the game always crashed it.

Nice work Ascension, it worked wonders to that quicksave, the report was that some spell was corrupted, and god knows what that was. :)

In my case I needed two or three times the "Beregost Crash Fixer" in the past. Everytime it was a corrupted spell, too (sorry I don't know which spell, but I'll take more attention to it the next time). Is the Beregost bug which solves the "Beregost Crash Fixer" everytime a corrupted spell or could it be another corrupted file, too?

The Beregost Crash Fixer was originally programmed because I found out that a large proportion of corrupted saved games did not load because of corrupted spell memorization data in a single field of a single CRE in the Beregost area. This is why the program always seems to report that there is a corrupted spell slot. In reality, this is all the utility checks for.

Subsequently, I discovered that another set of saved game corruptions were because the ZLIB compression for some reason compressed the saved game in a way that made it unopenable in-game. Re-packaging using the Java ZLIB package in NearInfinity seemed to fix the problem, so I later added this feature in the Beregost Crash Fixer so that players wouldn't have to manually fix their games.

The Beregost Crash Fixer currently doesn't do anything else, but I am aware of one occasion where a corrupted saved game still loaded, but the XY coordinates for a bounding box for a particular door was corrupted. Other corruptions are definitely possible, since little has been found about the original code that results in the corruption.

Hi QNine,

You don't actually need to know anything about BG modding to use this program, but here are the instructions in a more complete form:

  • Download Java Runtime Environment v6.0 from <a href="http://java.sun.com/...oads/index.jsp" target="_blank">http://java.sun.com/.../index.jsp</a>.
  • Install Java Runtime Envirionment v6.0. If you already use JRE, I recommend uninstalling previous versions first.
  • Download BeregostCrashFixer.zip (link above), then unzip BeregostCrashFixer.zip anywhere at all.
  • Go to the directory you extracted the ZIP to and double-click on BeregostCrashFixer.jar
  • Click the button '...', then navigate to find your corrupt BALDUR.SAV file (typically <Baldur's Gate installation directory>\save\<save game name>\BALDUR.SAV)
  • If there are no errors, you should see 'Loaded file:<your file>' in the text area, and the 'Process' button at the bottom of the program will be enabled
  • Click the 'Process' button and wait; the text area will inform you of scanning the Beregost area file and if any errors are present, else it will output 'No errors found.'
  • When the status bar above the text area shows the word 'Done.', BALDUR.SAV has been patched (or not if there were no problems found) and you are ready to try the save game.
  • A backup is made in the same directory as the input BALDUR.SAV, called BALDUR.BAK.
Hope that is clear for you.

This was a really clear walkthrough.
Thank you!

Perhaps it is a good idea to put this in the readme.

I never had problems with an older version of Beregost Crash Fixer, but the current version is not working at all for me. I have read all the posts on this topic and tried all the suggestions, but I have yet to get version 1.7 to work. Here are the details.

I saved the game yesterday while the group was in Beregost. Today the game crashes while I try to load it to continue playing.

My Java version is JRE 6U13. Do I need to go back to JRE 6U0?
My java.exe file is in D:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe
My Beregost Crash Fixer.jar file is in F:\Crash Fixer\BeregostCrashFixer17\BeregostCrashFixer.jar
My game save file is in E:\Black Isle\BGII - SOA\Save

I would like to get the older versions as they always worked with with this computer setup and this BGT game. This is the first time I have use BeregostCrashFixer17. I really do not like it. Why fix something that was not broke?

I finally got BeregostCrashFixer17 to work. I have added a batch file to my desk top. Here is a copy of the file.

Open NotePad and create the following:

D:
CD Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
java -jar F:\CrashFixer\BeregostCrashFixer17\BeregostCrashFixer.jar
exit

Save as Fixer.bat

Explanation of the file.

D: is the partition where I installed JRE 6U13. Most people install it to the C: partition so use C: in the batch file.

CD Program Files\Java\jre6\bin changes the directory to where the java.exe file is located in my installation. If you installed Java elsewhere use that folder.

F:\CrashFixer\BeregostCrashFixer17\BeregostCrashFixer.jar is where BeregostCrashFixer.jar is installed on my computer. Use the folder where your version is installed.

java -jar F:\CrashFixer\BeregostCrashFixer17\BeregostCrashFixer.jar is the command to run Beregost Crash Fixer

exit ends the Fixer.bat program.

This program works in Windows XP. I do not know if it works in Vista.

To use Beregost Crash Fixer, just click on the Fixer.bat icon.

Tom

Funny. I don't know what the previous version you used was, but all that changed was the addition of other languages, and the dreaded i18n support. No path changes were made.

Hi Ascension64:

Thanks for the reply.

I believe the previous version I had was Version 1.3. With that version, I just click on the program and the program found what it needed. The files were in the same location as they are today. With version 1.7, I need to tell to start in the java.exe folder and tell it where my program is. However, after that it runs like before. I added many Windows XP updates since using the older version, it would not surprise me if one of them has "helped."

I may have also typed one of the paths incorrectly. That would have added to my problems. I should have checked spelling more carefully, but I was in a hurry. I hope the batch file will be useful to others as it saves a lot of typing when you do get the save files messed up.

Updated to v1.7b. No changes to the program, just updated the readme instructions, thanks to Leomar.
