I was wondering why there are virtually no quest-related mods for Icewind Dale 2, other than the Undead Targos mod, after all these years? I mean, Icewind Dale 2 has a great game-engine, unlike BG2, a pretty good story-line etc., yet BG1/the original Icewind Dale/BG2/TOEE/NWN etc. have endless extra quest-mods, by comparison. I suppose it might possibly be due to the game-engine stupidly limiting XP-points for slain enemy-NPCs, as characters get beyond a certain level of experience at each chapter, but that problem could be easily circumvented by just artificially giving extra quest-related XP points to make up for this.

Also, has anyone thought of introducing a wild-mage class for Icewind Dale 2? It would presumably involve replacing one of the original mage-kits, but that wouldn't be much of a loss.

I was wondering why...

I think that's cause there is only barelly one mod, and that's a tweak pack, unless you count the addition packs, but they were part of the sell pack, so no.

No that might not be, but as that does involve a hard moding experiance, dedication and the right tools. Not to discourage, but there are no tools I have seen, and no one willing :(

Not really as hard as you'd think. DLTCEP and WeiDU can handle IWD2 just fine. The biggest issue I've seen is that some of the file format information in the IESDP is just plain wrong and this makes patching the game with WeiDU somewhat difficult.

The most difficult thing is that adding BG2-style NPCs is impossible, but there's workarounds for this (the player has to include the NPC on the create party screen for banters and interjections to function).

Wait, wait, how come nobody mentioned Domi's IWD2 NPCs from Gibberlings3.net yet? Weimer's Tweaks/EaseOfUse work, too - see Weidu.org. Not exactly what you're looking for, I know, but it's all good.

No idea about quest mods, though. I played the game once, and was unable to finish it - boredom. Maybe that's the reason.

I'm amazed that you could possibly find it boring. It's a 100 times more fun than the first Icewind Dale 1, plus it has a great 3rd edition AD&D engine, and the storyline is pretty good(for once the villains are even ratehr sympathetic, by comparison to other AD&D PC games). I suppose there must indeed be a serious problems re modding the game as otherwise it would have as many mods as BG2, given its scope. What I would love is for there to be dozens of side-quests, especially around chapters 3,4 and 5, with the original villains in the various chapters being enhanced by a Tactics-style mod in order to compensate for the extra XP the party would get from the additional quests.

...and still boring (at least for me)
I guess some girls just don't like endless hack-n-slashing without any meaningful character interaction, side-quests and well-written dialogues :)

Hack n slash is awesome. IWD ruled, IWD2 didn't. It was boring.

While I find the intra-group BG2-character-interaction amusing on occasion, I don't really see it as being all that essential to a game. As for Icewind Dale 2, while there was no actual banter between party-members, there was a great deal of interaction with NPCs, much more so than with BG2 - for example, you'd need high charisma to initiate some very interesting dialogues and quests. And I thought that the ICWD2 villains in each chapter were very complex and interesting, IMO. NWN is similiar, in that there's not much banter between the PC and his lackeys, but a great deal of interaction with the various NPCs. That's what I prefer:- interesting, complex NPCs with various motivations and good dialogue, , plus more complex ways of winning fights than just hack'n'slash(not surprisingly, I generally favour playing mages/sorcerers than fighters in games like NWN etc.)

The original Icewind Dale, though, was just a mindless hack'n'slash throughout the entire game - apart from a couple of interesting story-arcs and characters(eg:- the white dragon in the Heart of Winter expansion), I found it incredibly dull. Yet, it has 2 expansions and a few extra side-quests, while its sequel has nothing. Tragic, really.

The NPC mod for IWD II is awesome

Custom portraits and sound sets and all the banters and romance........

I did not say they are high quality, but I am gratful enough for the efforts and I really liked how you can romance few of the created npcs

Also its got more than 5 npcs so you can choose who you want every time you restart

Although sound sets didnt work well for me except for Sir Nord (if you download the mod, he's the most awesome paladin ever created)

One thing though....... it lags a lot due to the time it has to load up all the interjections and banters......

and it took twice as long for me to reload a saved game now..............

Maybe it's just because of my computer.. but that sure is a drastic change for confort in game.

Also one more thing, there's homosexual (gay, not lesbian) romance in the mod, that's why I approved it so much for it encouraging the modern (not really but more appealing within) sexuality.

I think its not really boring more annoying then anything at least for me...When just about every fight is with like 20 goblins 5 orcs 2 trolls and 3 ogres and you have to rest after every fight with a 87.53 chance of getting attacked...it starts to drain on you :(

and the load times are just that way for that mod no getting around it sadly to my understanding :(

Modmaking isn't over yet for IWD2:
As far away as China people are still modding the game. There are quite some modders over at Sorcerer's place. Below is my WeiDU log to give you an example of the alterations you can make to the game.
There aren't true expansions adding loads of new content, but many enhancements to the original game. Plus with Icewind Gate II, Weimer's abandoned beta, you can play Shadows of Amn in IWD2 engine.
Check out the new posts i put on blackwyrmlair:

It's only boring if you have no imagination. I mean well written dialogue and character development is all well and good, but it's just as fun to make a party of your own characters and roleplay each one, deciding yourself how they react and interact. Who needs in-game banters when you can make up your own banters in your head? In fact, it give a greater degree of freedom and flexibility to the game. What I like about it is I can have a completely different party each time, and it's never the same game twice.

Well...my feelings on IWD2 are mixed. I loathe the prologue in Targos, but it starts to improve once you're past the goblin warrens and gets really enjoyable after the ice temple. The first time I played it, I didn't like it at all to start. By the end I was enjoying it so much I wanted to start again immediately with a new party.
Having said that, if you use Domi's NPC mod, the boring bits become more bearable, and the quality of the mod is every good, even if it does slow down load times. As the guest poster says, with 10 different NPCs and 5 romanceable characters, there's lots of replayability.

Kulyok's NPC mod for IWD (1) is also wonderful. It does only have the 5 NPCs so the replayability isn't as high, but it's done really well (and the loadtimes don't suffer either). So do check that one out also. It's at Pocket Plane.

I'm someone who's a bit more inclined to enjoy the IWD series because party interactions, while nice, aren't 100% necessary for me and I often solo in BG. I love IWD/IWDII for the graphics, music and IMO good dialogue and stories, but as Vicen said, when you're battling so much of the time and it's just hordes and hordes of monsters through a dungeon that takes 4 hours to get through, followed by another 4 hour slaughter, and another...you just get worn out, that's why I've never completed either game. I would say I like the games, though.

Can't be bothered to log in, personally i found the IWD2 NPC mod fantastically written, from what ive seen only 1 or 2 tiny little typos that werent noticeable, the writiing was magnificent and in right amounts, and it was paced excellently. My load times were perfect all throughout, probably because my computer's a mini-god that devours souls.. but its a great mod!
