CTD entering the Slums in Athkatla

Hey again!

Well, had a great time with BG! The banter pack really brings the game to life!

Anywho - I just started BG2, and I have a CTD upon entering the slums.

Thing is, I've been to the slums before. I'm not very far into BG2. Basically, I FF'd thru the Chores, did Irenicus's dungeon (where I picked up Wulfgar, Yoshimo, then had to drop Yoshi for Drizzt), came out into the Promenade, went straight to the Slums, did the chat with Gaelan and started Chapter 2, then I went to the CNet to drop off Drizzt and Wulfgar and pick up Yoshimo again. When I removed Drizzt he said something like, "You will never see me again," and he and Wulfgar walked offscreen.

I then went back to the Promenade, picked up Aerie, did a little shopping and now I want to come back to the Slums to do all the Slums quests (clean out the CNet, etc). But now I get a crash upon entering the slums. The area fully loads, I hear the "armor rattle" from entering a new area and then CTD.

I'm thinking this has something to do with RoT. I was looking at a "walkthru" and I guess the main quest for RoT is supposed to pick up eventually in the Slums by someone talking to you or something. Im wondering if since I don't have Drizzt that's what's causing the crash.

Also, I traveled to the Slums the first time during the day. The CTD is happening at night. I can travel to other areas at night. Also, if I rest until morning, then I can travel to the Slums.

Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this CTD? Night time's fun time in the Slums!

Whatever is causing me to crash at night in the Slums also is making me crash in the slum sewers. I'm getting the same error message in my err file for both crashes.

I think it's COM Encounters that's screwing things up.

Shagbag appears at night in the slums, right? The readme for COM Encounters says there's some "sewers encounters" but fails to describe what/where these encounters are. Any idea if there is a COM Encounter in the Slum Sewer?

It does mean there's a messed-up CRE but unfortunately that baldur.err message does not tell us which one. So it'll be a question of guesswork and elimination to figure out which, like we're trying to do here. The only real way I know of to find out which CRE is causing the problem is to edit your ar0400.are in DLTCEP or NI and delete the actors 1 by 1, save the area, and then try reentering it from a save before you entered the area for the first time. Make sure you back up the area first (Save Area As somewhere else) so you can restore it to the override folder when you're done. I'd start by deleting the more unique CREs, as chickens, rats, etc. aren't likely to be the problem.

Once you figure out which CRE, you can narrow down which mod may have buggered it by doing a 'weidu --change-log suspect.cre' from the command prompt. But that won't help much right now.

I'm looking at AR0400 in the NI, but Im not seeing a lot of unique NPCs. Plus, these NPCs all appear during the day with no problem.

I know certain NPCs only appear at night. How do I view those NPCs?

I opened the BCS and searched for If-Then's that spawn on NIGHT and deleted the two encounters that spawn on Night and the one that spawns on MIDNIGHT and recompiled and saved. The crash still happens.

Any other ideas? And thanks for everything so far! :D

If you scroll down on the area actors in NI or DLTCEP, you'll see each one is scheduled to appear at certain times (where it says "Present at" in NI and "Schedule" in DLTCEP). Some are only there at night, like landlord, slaver4, etc. It might also be a spawn, but if it crashes on entering, it's probably an actor. Could also be something in the script. In the unmodded game, Habib only spawns at night, but who knows what all those mods add the the script.

Having the unmodded area probably won't help you if it's something in the area script, which is the way most mods add CREs to the game. Also, it won't help you if a mod has changed a default CRE to mess it up.

If you want to attach your ar0400.are and ar0400.baf (exported from NI, DLTCEP or WeiDU), I can try taking a look at it, but I don't have all those mods (and don't plan to heh) so I probably can't tell much about it, except what it may be doing beyond the vanilla game.

Gosh... that sure is kind of you! I've been banging my head on this all morning. It's not really that big of a deal (I could CLUA the Dawn Ring if I had to), but I'm afraid that if there's a creature problem here (and in the slums sewers BTW) that it'll crash more important things later on.

It's just so frustrating. I played thru BGI without any serious game breakers (that I wasn't able to fix with a quick forum search or google) and now it seems like as soon as I start getting immersed into BG2, something breaks. :(

PS. Yeah, you were right about the file. I inserted the vanilla ARE into my override and cleared my cache and traveling to the slums at night still crashed my game. :(

Also the 2 black market shop keepers are in the area file to appear at night. SLSHOP01 and SLSHOP02 are the dudes' codes and I don't know if they would be modded beyond their shop contents or if that would even cause a crash on entry. The crash would most likely be through dialog in that event where you access the shop.

I have had these bugs before and helped others with theirs in this instance. The underdark crash rang a bell and there was the infamous druid grove one as well.

My process is this:

1) Open the area file in NI. Make a list on paper the creature codes for all actors in the area. You probably won't have to worry about rats and seagulls crashing the game so skip them as they are used all over the place.

2) Now write the creature codes down from those spawned by BCS whether they are at the day or night. Your crash could come from a quest NPC firing if the checks are met.

3) Load any save-game and start CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("xxx") where xxx is the code for the creatur(s) on your list.

It is a little time consuming but you will narrow things down a lot quicker and you will be skilled when the time comes again for the next CTD in another area.

Keep a record of all your bugs in one topic like this one as your WeiDU log is always present. When you find the suspect creature then you will be on your way to bugfixing. You can even post the bad creature file for someone to fix or give you a new one.

Crazy. That is an absolutely brilliant suggestion. Man, I used to be so much more savvy about these things when I was younger. 10 years ago I would have thought of that in an instant.

So, yeah, SlumsMugger2 and 4 don't exist. I tried to CLUA them and I got a file not found error. You were right about Mugger2 and Mugger4. I CLUA'd them and when I unpaused even a convo popped up, "Get em," etc.

However, why would this cause a CTD? It seems like the spawn would simply fail to start.

Anywho, I'm going to fix the script in NI to call Mugger2 and Mugger4 and I'll test it next time my game goes from day to night.

Grrrrr!!! I don't get it!

I CLUA'd the stores. They worked fine (even was able to view their store).

I then went to the script and searched for things that spawned at Night. I was able to CLUA in all of these creatures, too.

Try being in the slums at daytime and ctrl+t (time cheat) and maybe we can get a glimpse of what time exactly this corrupted character appears.



Interesting... the game crashes at Hour 22.

That's "Night" right and not "DuskEnd"? Isn't DuskEnd 21?

Well, just searched the script - there's nothing at DuskEnd anyways.

Is there some sort of Global Heartbeat script (like in NWN)? Maybe if I searched that for "night" and "ar0400" or something...

It could well be a scheduled actor then. The best place to look is NI, as it will tell you the times each one shows up, like I said above. But Hoppy's suggestion is a good one to narrow down which CRE it is - probably someone modded a vanilla CRE poorly.

I am. It appears that the only creatures that spawn at 22 are the two storekeeps and slaver4 (all of which I was able to spawn by CLUA)

Then try consoling the CREs that spawn at NIGHT in the area script (same as DUSK_END I believe). Start with O#Ganel, O#Mac, O#Remus, O#Teagan, O#Grudin, move on to ArlaxT2 etc. The fact that CMGMIRI has a buggered comment string is a bit suspect too (linked to the Short Bow description, huh?).

CMGMiri.cre and CMGMiri25.cre are screwed up. They won't display in NI, either.

I did a google for cmgmiri and lo and behold... this is a known issue.

It looks like COM Encounters don't play well with others. I'd found other threads about this screwing up, so I'm guessing I'm going to have issues all over the place. The attached fixpack should help others that are having issues with COM Encounters messing up their megamod.

This component will give you problems as it overwrites files instead of patching them. It's been preceded by the Dark Horizons Mod that contains both of them and more and doesn't overwrite stuff.
