Hi! I create this topic in this forum because  I'm trying to install "Baldur's Gate" with Big World Setup , but I have a problem with the sounds of NPC's and characters (And menu ) in BG1 and BG2

The problem is very weird , because the music sound , enviroment sound and other sound effects work , but the voices and menu sounds don't work .

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro, but I have a laptop with Windows 10 Pro and the game works with all sounds ( I can't use this laptop, I have no more space and much less to install BWS. ) . I tried to install "Open Al " but It made no difference.

Anyone know the problem?

Regards

What kind of sound system setup do you have (aka how many loudspeaker do you have) ? If it's 5.1 or 7.1, the multi output mode is really problematic as the old game can't really process the info because it was coded in a really old style... so setting it back to the 4.0 should fix most cases..
That's one, there's another one, but if effects only some sound cards and it slows the game down, so it's unlikely the issue.

Edit, in case it's not obvious to everybody, it seemed to be for Spiron, from his reply.... you can set the output mode to be 4.0 at least in Windows from inside the system volume control panel, which fixes the above know problem.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

This is a very old post, but I have this issue which you mentioned but did not discuss in detail! I have the problem where footstep sounds, weather sounds, environmental audio etc. slow down the game when enabled,  but I don't actually have any audio playing from the game. How is that issue solved?

I have the problem where footstep sounds, weather sounds, environmental audio etc. slow down the game when enabled,  but I don't actually have any audio playing from the game. You have two problems:

-No sound- issue; you set the game to play in 2.0 stereo sound. You can do this in Windows, on the lower right corner, if you have output devices, you can open the "volume controls" with left click, you need to right click it, which opens options to other things, one of which is output devices, clicking left on that and then selecting the output device, yes the 7-5.1 stereo system, in that you open the "defenition" setting on the buttom left corner, it has options to set to 2.0, 4.0, 5.1 ... and so on depending on the exact model. Set that  to be 2.0... the 4.0 might work, but that too depends on the system and how those are setup, as the game is coded only to support 2.0 system, having the loudest loud speaker make no sound because it has no coded output... while the bass loudspeaker makes every non bass sound which it's not programmed to be able to and you hear nothing.

-Enviroment sounds slowing the game- issue; you just need to turn off the enviroment sounds(when needed), aka you open the game folder, in where you find the baldur.ini file, open that with Notepad and edit the lines concerning "Low Mem Sounds", and set them to be exactly:

Low Mem Sounds 1=0
Low Mem Sounds 2=1

This should fix that issue. Also there's 25 point post I made - profile change ago. This being among just one.

It won't help the problem to do as you suggested. The speakers were already set to stereo output, setting it again did not solve the problem.

Have you any information about what you meant here? - "That's one, there's another one, but if effects only some sound cards and it slows the game down, so it's unlikely the issue."

Well, it has to do with the 25 point list of lag helps... and ..

These is also a large problem with a few "Realtek HD Audio" cards, and the lag can be eased with turning the sounds off... but that's not a good solution to the problem, if you have a working solution, please state it here, and make it known to others.

... that's what I remember it to refer to. Aka the problem is for external sound cards etc.
