However, I've been replaying BG1 for a while now, with a character with proficiency in Katana, without finding any of the weapon types introduced in BG2. Are there none in the BG1 part of Trilogy, or is it just that I have not found the merchants selling them yet? If there are none, there is really no point in putting skill points into those weapon skills, I assume?

In "vanilla" BGT there are none, but there are some tweaks that will add them to the game. I think BG2Tweaks and BGTTweaks both add some exotic weapons to the game. Don't expect to find magic version of those anyway.
i always shadowkeeper one to my PC when i start. i mean, if you were proficient in katana, shouldn't you already own one?

Well, you need to install one of the BGT Tweaks components to get few +1 weapons from Taemon the Blacksmith in Berecost...However, I've been replaying BG1 for a while now, with a character with proficiency in Katana, without finding any of the weapon types introduced in BG2. Well, a wooden practice weapon is not the same as a real weapon.I always shadowkeeper one to my PC when i start. i mean, if you were proficient in katana, shouldn't you already own one?

"Infinity turns out to be the opposite of what people say it is. It is not 'that which has nothing beyond itself' that is infinite, but 'that which always has something beyond itself'." -Aristotle
