cd program files (x86)\black isle\bgII - SOA (or insert the path to your bg2 folder here)

Just to remind the others that one cannot install the game into that folder if they have a Windows Vista or Windows 7, as the game is not 'certified' for the two operation systems... so you have to have Windows XP(x64) to be able to install the game there. :whistling:
Although if you have a Japanese Window 7 OS, the Program Files semi-folders could be natively different and so the "program files (x86)" wouldn't be 'protected', which could make it usable, but I wouldn't know...

But thanks for the help, I'll try to remember that. ...hmm, it seems I was right:

and select defaults, under default code page select: 437 (OEM - United States) and click OK.

The most obvious reason why you could not write the marker you were given, is that your Operation Systems local encoding is different from the usual(a "non-ANSI system locales"), this also can reflect in the install process, as the markers are all understood differently by the process, so I think you need to set it to the English(United States) when you install the mod.

Um, I'm having two problems with that, for one when I select defaults it just gives me the properties menu (same as if I'd selected properties). And secondly I have the regular \ and not the Japanese one now, but the installer still crashes at the same point in the same way. I do have the files in just C:/Black Isle/whatever also so that's not my problem either. And my OS is not Japanese I had just been running it in Japanese for a while but I have since switched everything back to normal.

It doesn't crash at the same point, because the last screenshot shows the garbage after hobgo4.cre, whereas the first time it made it to wolfd1.cre or something. You don't have some sort of anti-virus or other memory-resident software running, do you? If so, deactivate all that completely during the install.

I do have the files in just C:/Black Isle/whatever also so that's not my problem either. And my OS is not Japanese I had just been running it in Japanese for a while but I have since switched everything back to normal.

It might *seem* English (or whatever) but still be running some Asian codepages in the background.

See troubleshooting in the Infinity Animations readme - the first and last points respectively for how to change your codepage and disable memory-resident software. They can both cause issues for installing any big mods.

Ok, I tried disabling everything and and deactivating my anti-virus but nothing changed. I'm starting to think BGT just doesn't work with Windows 7 since it always worked so easily before I "upgraded"...I miss XP...And BGT... :(

I have had the BGT installed a few times on Windows 7 (32bit), so it does work believe that... you just have to do what you have to...

Uninstall the game, set the codex to be the OEM - United States, and disabling your User Account Control and the Program Compatibility Assistant, install the games into the c: drives "games" directory, not into any of the Program Files sub directories, install the patches, try the games so it autosaves after you have imported one of the premade character(this is the fastest way to get the game rolling) and exit the game, make a backup from the game directories, and then you can modify them...

Ok, I've done all of that and it still doesn't work. I do get an error now at the end of each attempt to run the setup.

_WeiDu.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click ok to end the application.

Bump with a new much longer debug.

SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED Baldur's Gate Trilogy - Core

So erhm... OK the file has this too:

Executing: [BGT/Install/EndInit.bat]

But...

Hmm, question comes, did that come up in the dos window(the black cmd.exe like window), or from the Windows Program Compatibility Assistant(in white window) ? The PCA is a program which you should turn off for at least the duration of your mod installations?

I've got the PCA completely disabled so it must have been in the dos prompt.

On a side note it really did install BGT, I'm able to start in BG1 up until the point where I finish creating a character. It starts to load the first thing, loading screen and all, then it just crashes and kicks me back to windows with no error message.

Did you try to start a no sorcerer/mage character ? It has been reported that at least those might crash...

I just noticed that a few of the area folders are empty...Is there some other way I could get the files since my install seems to not want to work correctly?

I really think your CDs are messed up or something. You might want to make sure they're clean and have no scratches (use a disk descratcher if so). Also, make sure you do a *custom* and *full* install of both games before patching and installing BGT. This is particularly important for BG1, as it's easy to overlook there.

There are some "BG1 missing files" included with the BiG World Project (Fixpack I think) but it sounds like you are missing bigger files than those.

I checked and my CDs are clean and unscratched, it's actually a fairly new copy of BG1 since my old 5 disc copy died after 10 years or so.

I'm ordering a new copy of BG just in case there is some scratch or something, I'll let you know if it fixes it.

Well I got brand new discs and I get the same problem with the wacky symbols in the install and it not really installing everything.  So it definitely isn't a scratched disc problem.  I'll attach my debug again, maybe it has something useful this time.

Ok, well if you got the same behaviour with 2 copies, it definitely isn't a disk issue. I'm going to go back to this then:

I do have the files in just C:/Black Isle/whatever also so that's not my problem either. And my OS is not Japanese I had just been running it in Japanese for a while but I have since switched everything back to normal.

Well I've checked both those issues, I've gone into the region settings and changed it to English and I've turned off my virus scanner while installing.  I've had the language changed for a while now and turning off the virus scan gives no change to the problem, so clearly that's not the problem...Is there anything else it could be?  This is really getting frustrating.

Did you disable *all* components of Avast as specified there? Some are hidden, so it's not like you can just right-click and close or disable it - you have to go into the startup manager.

The problem is, you are not getting a reproduceable error. Every error you post happens somewhere else. This time, you've installed BGT successfully, but get an error in BGTDOS.DEBUG (I am not sure of the difference between BGT and BGTDOS) that says:

[BG1MOVIE/ENDMOVIE.MVE] created from [c:/black isle/baldur's gate/MOVIES/MOVIECD4.BIF]
The handle could not be duplicated during
a pipe operation.

I have no clue what that means, but it's not the same as the previous errors. This sort of thing leads me to suspect Avast, which is notorious for causing issues like this even when it's supposedly "disabled."

@Zamza: Make sure you particularly disable these "shields" in avast ;) (but to be frank, I'm not even sure Zamza is even using avast )
