Problems with mods in mega mod game

I added some mods to a mega mod game. One or more is not compatible with another as I have major problems (see other recent posts). I have used BWP version 9.1 and 9.3. Since both have the same errors so I assume the errors are not caused by this installer. The problems are:

1) Initial Gorion cut scene crashes the game at least once. If you replay it, eventually it works.

2) Many enemies do not fight. They just stand there for me to kill them.

3) Trying to enter Firewine Plains always crashes the game.

4) I cannto kill Saverok. I get him to near death, but he will not die. CTRL-Y does not kill him.

5) I can finish all the other mods that are installed.

First of all, putting your WeiDU.log in spoiler tags can cut down on forum spam.

1) Initial Gorion cut scene crashes the game at least once. If you replay it, eventually it works.

3) Trying to enter Firewine Plains always crashes the game.

I'd've thought you'd've seen this by now, but for any crashes, always post the contents of your Baldur.err log!

2) Many enemies do not fight. They just stand there for me to kill them.

Seen this reported several times. Only way I can think of to investigate is find out the exact enemies (.cre files) and look at their scripts with an editor (DLTCEP or NearInfinity) for potential issues.

4) I cannto kill Saverok. I get him to near death, but he will not die. CTRL-Y does not kill him.

Look at his .cre file(s) too, at both the scripts and any odd items some mod may have given him (like min1hp.itm).

Totally empty? Do you have Logging On=1 in your baldur.ini file under Program Options? And did you look at it right after (reproducing) the crash?

#3 might be an animation issue, especially if the area crashes immediately on load. On way to troubleshoot is to spawn all the Actors in ar3400.are (look at it with an editor) via CLUAConsole, also the ones in the area script that get spawned via CreateCreature. If one crashes, that's the problem.

Not sure about the cutscene if there's no baldur.err message unless you can pin down exactly where it's crashing (like when someone casts a spell or switches weapons). Sounds like it's not very reproduceable...

Yes, "Logging On=1" is in baldur.ini. The only thing I see in the Baldur.err file is the header.

You could narrow that down a bit at least, by using the change-log function on the suspected files (see Jarno's posted FAQ for instructions on that). But the problem is, you don't know which exact files, since it could be a spell that's cast in the cutscene or a creature in the area file or script. But there are shorter ways to troubleshoot that, like I described above.

I had three problems. One was the game crashed when going to the Gorion cut scene. The second was the game crashed when going to Firewine Plains. The third was I could not kill Severok. I found it was easy to check the first two, so I created games with various combinations of mods until I identified the mod that cause the problem. This took some time as I created about 40 games to do this.

The setup was as follows. Each game was created using BiG Wold Project and a slightly modified BiG World Install.bat file. The same BiG World Install.bat file was used for all tests. The problem with killing Severok was not checked. The game was started and I moved to Gorion to start the cut scene. If the cut scene was successful, left Gorion's Rest by the south side and went to High Hedge, left High Hedge by the east side and went to Beregost, left Beregost by the south side and went to Beregost Wilderness, left Beregost Wilderness by the east side and went to Fireside Plains. If the move to Fireside Plains was successful, deleted the game and stared another game with different mods. Each mod that caused a crash was check twice. If both failed, a new version was loaded and also checked. All three failed for the ones listed below.

Here are the results:

Crashed on Gorion cut scene... pnpcelestials_v5.exe, slandor.1.6.zip, and scs-v14.exe
Crashed on entering Firewine Plains... SpellPackB5Full.exe
Problems installing with WeiDU... BDash168.exe

I did not include any NPC mods in this test. The reasons for the problem were not investigated. My operating system is Windows XP Pro with all updates and have a feeling that one of the Windows XP updates is contributing to the problem. I still get a few non-reproducible crashes that seem strongly related to Windows XP.

Here on are my comments on creating mods that may help eliminate problems. Most mods are written this way.

1) Don't plagiarize. If someone has already included a change, don't add it to your mod.
2) Use the original game or mod as the default. Make your modifications the option.
3) Don't bunch changes together. Make each a separate option.

I hope this helps some of you with similar problems.

Crashed on Gorion cut scene... scs-v14.exe

Could be the SCS Faster Bears component crashing again ... did the area have bears?? :unsure: (it's fixed in the latest SCS btw)


That area is certainly capable of spawning bears (though possibly only when using BGSpawn). Would they be an issue if they were offscreen?

That area is certainly capable of spawning bears. Would they be an issue if they were offscreen?

The game would crash as soon as it tried to load the creature (i.e. while loading the area or when the creature was created). But I wouldn't conclude (or assume) that Faster Bears was responsible until there's something to substantiate it.

It spawns bears in the unmodded game (see the "Respawning" field here).

Is your baldur.err file still empty, tomkaz?

Sorry for the late reply. Been under the weather with sinus problems and the meds make me sleep all the time. Thanks to all who replied. The suggestions will be tested and I will let you know the results.


To Lollorian:

Gorion talks to you at the Candlekeep gate, then the screen goes black and it should reopen in Gorion's Rest. The game crashes while the screen is black and you never see any of the action in Gorion's Rest.

With BDash168.exe, instead of being installed with WeiDU, WeiDU asks a lot of questions on how it should be installed. I think there was about 5 screens of questions.

To Arkenor:

After SCS crashed, I downloaded a fresh copy of SCS-V14. I will look for a later version.

Also, I did not include BGSpawn in my mega-mod game until the mods which caused problems were removed.

To Wisp:

As I understand what you said, it does seem that this is the problem I had.

To Miloch:

I forgot to check my baldur.err file. I will repeat the process and see if any error messages show up.

This is an object lesson to me: in this era of automated installations, it's clearly a really bad idea for me to leave older versions of my mods accessible (at least, under their original download name).

I have an error maessage for this on a "recommended" install, which doesn't contain the Lost Crossroads Spell Pack for BG2 (Beta) v5. I will investigate.

What exactly does the err tell me? The area wouldn't crash just because a creature isn't there, would it? Does anyone know which mod "dw#oghob" comes from?

dw is the prefix for davidw, who wrote SCS.
SCS got killed by the installer if no gen_biff is used.

Now look at the cre, look at code and you have a potential cause:

(BiG World Installpack\empty_override.bat deleted the files - which was called during 9.3 installs - or you used the cleanup-batch that shipped with BWP 9.4.)

Yeah, it sure could. Fastest way to fix (short of getting a fixed mod) is just to copy and rename another creature (like some other hobgoblin) to dw#oghob.cre and put it in your override.
