Posts I've Made

In Topic: [WIP] Revised BWP Guide

Figured I'd best post some kind of update, considering the time things are taking.

Prior to the hard drive crash I was mostly just creating unix native copies of the BWP Fixpack (BWFP) patches, and not having a great time of it either.

Making the patches is simple enough (if time consuming), but trying to reverse engineer what the hell the BWFP was doing in the first place was a nightmare.  Another nightmare (as far as I'm concerned) is the fact I literally had no idea what most of them were even for :WTF:

I had known (for months) that I was going to have to do a deep dive through the forums anyways, but kept putting it off.  It was going to be a hell of a project and I knew it.  After the crash, I've decided to remove my head from my backside and focus on the forums instead.  Little by little, I'm understanding what problems the patches were written to fix.  I've also discovered some of those "fixes" probably should have been handled  differently (I'm no modder or coder, but even a layman can see that on some of 'em).

Anyways, I'm still plugging away at things, but forum content has to take precedence for now.  I've got mountains of posts to go through, and tons of notes to take.  This is going to mean a serious delay to the project, but it's the best way forward.

Again, sorry for the endless delays

Well, sadly, I've discovered why I was having all those off the wall problems with installation ... my hard drive was going bad.

The really annoying thing about that is that it's "smart" sensor kept claiming it was running fine  :new_bottom:

Lost months worth of work due to that stupid thing.

Have the computer itself up and running again, tho still have a fair bit of configuring to finish up.  Will try to get the game installed asap.

Sorry for the endless delays :ermm:

Thought I'd best post a status update, as my posts will  be fewer for awhile now.  RL has come to bite me in the arse yet again

Folks, I live in the central US, and last weekend we had some pretty major flooding.  The rivers have (finally) gone down enough to see the extent of the damage, and it's not good.

At any rate, I'm a (supposed to be) retired construction worker, but have been called back into service (yet again) to help with the repairs (on the houses  that can even be repaired).  I swear, I catch hell every time I go into one of the local building supply stores.  I know everyone there, and they always have to ask just how many times I've been retired now :whistling:   Honestly I've lost count.

Anyways, I haven't forgotten about the project, but this is going to slow things down even further.  It's heavy manual labor for awhile now, and I'm usually too damned tired to even think by the time I get in.

Will continue as I have the time (and energy) to do so.

https://github.com/B...p-TDD.tp2.patch, but there are several others you may want to have a look at as well.

I only tried running with Ninde once, but the stuttering was something fierce.  I know they were rewriting the mod at one point to try to fix it, but not sure what ever happened.

I'm currently busy translating the BWP patch files for TDD from DOS to Linux, and have run into an interesting question.

The PDF was saying that the Ninde NPC mod is incompatible with TDD, as TDD rewrites the dialog for Ellesime in such a way that it breaks Ninde.  Interestingly, there is a patch for this on the github site.  Am wondering if this issue hadn't long been fixed.  Does anyone run with both the Ninde mod and TDD?  Would love to hear about it.

Also wanted to clear things up a bit.  From my posts, you may get the (wrong) idea that I'm hating on Leonardo.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  I have nothing but the utmost respect for the man.  I suspect he is a Bhallspawn himself in real life ... would almost have to be to create the BWP and keep it running as long as he did.

My gripes deal with one of those (real life) sad - but true issues ... documentation is always at the bottom of the priority list when it comes to development.  Do you have any idea of the number of the mods I've worked with for this project that don't even have a Readme file?  And, of the ones that do, it turns out to be just a list of dates for different releases (no info on what was changed)?

The folks that were entrusted to keep the PDF updated weren't taking the job too damned seriously, and it shows.  From blocks of instruction for installing mod [a] pasted in  the middle of mod [r]  (leaving partial instructions for [a] tagged onto [r]'s end), to instructions meant for mod [r] that were misplaced into mod [a], to the fact they were just copy/pasting without checking if previous component entries were still correct (not to mention incompatibility listings that had already been fixed) ...  I could go on.  I  can't tell you how many times the PDF is offering suggestions for installing component options that don't even exist.  I'd understand it if the mods had been updated since the PDF was written, but they are very often the same version.

Those are just a few samples of the issues I've been running into.  These have been addressed in the txt file, but it'll be awhile before I can write any instructions on how to install.  Right now, I'm too busy troubleshooting.

Anyways, if anyone has installed both TDD and Ninde (via the BWP) I'd love to hear about your experiences.  Same with the Rylorn NPC mod, for that matter (does anyone even still use that mod?).  Rylorn always annoyed the hell outta me as a player ... every NPC sentence ends with an exclamation mark :ermm: .  An interesting mod but (IMHO) poorly written.
