Well, he didn't. He turned Vader who killed the emperor. And he was able to that because of the emotions Vader had for his son.

Did he really? I'd say he defeated the Emperor, and redeemed Vader.

I'd say he realised the emotions a nice new quilt can inspire when given to someone

You could say that Luke defeated Vader and redeemed Anakin Skywalker.

But by redeeming Anakin, he defeated Vader and the Emporer, because Ankin Skywalker slew the emporer.

In fact, if you want to get really pedantic, Luke didn't redeem Anakin - but he was the means by which Anakin found his redemption.

If Luke hadn' gone up to confront Vader abd the Emporer, they would have survived. He defeated them. Let's call it that.

Heh, not really. I did say it was pure pedantry. :)

The actual Vader-Luke fight shows up one thing, and that is that Vader doesn't seem to be a very impressive lightsaber duellist. Not to the run-jump-flip standards of Qui-Gon (bless him) or Mace, anyway. All the saber fighting in Episodes 4-6 is, after all, conducted by old men, crippled men and comparatively untrained youngsters. This leads me to believe that Vader's main asset in a fight is his extremely powerful connection to the Force; rather than duelling Jedi one-on-one, it's easy to imagine him fighting with a combination of defensive lightsaber techniques and overwhelming force-power, strangling his opponent. All those mechanical body parts, although strong, probably can't be in tune with the Force and Vader's will like a living body can be. This is perhaps one reasonable advantage Luke had over Vader, possibly the only one - Luke had no real training in lightsaber technique, he was simply using the Force to guide his actions and protect himself, and that seemed to do the trick.

I'm guessing Vader didn't simply strangle Luke because he was trying to turn Luke to the Dark Side, not simply kill him.

Actualy I have read that Vader is an exquisite duelist. I think part of it was he was supposed to take Luke alive. Anotherp art was the anger flowing through Luke made him very powrful and overwhelming.

You have to realize that when EP 4-6 was filmed, they hadn't the same possibility to create advanced fights, like they do nowadays.

Vader/Anikin was a terrific lightsaber-fighter. You can see him in EP2 being the more aggressive combatant, compared to Obi-Wan. That isn't likely to change when he becomes even more powerful.

Besides, Qui-Gon was quite old in EP1 (60-80), or so I heard, at least.

I like Anikin more than Vader. He shows such anger (or would do, if it wasn't for the bad acting). Also, he's younger, more rebellic. I especially like the "Obi-Wan is holding me back!"-part. The scolding he recives from Obi-Wan on Coruscant is also very funny in contrast.

If only Christensen could injected some emotion into his role - tho I blame Lucas's awful script rather than the actor.

Don't get me started on Jake Loyd.

"It's working, it's working...!"

Do anyone wonder what he does today? It isn't making movies, that's for sure.

Ewan MacGregor, on the other hand, tackles the role of Obi-Wan perfectly. I do like his ironic touch to the oh-so wise Obi-Wan seen in Ep4.

Obi-Wan: I was beginning to wonder if you'd got my message.
Anakin: I retransmitted it to Coruscant, just as you'd requested, Master. Then we decided to come and rescue you.
Obi-Wan: [looks at Anikin's handcuffed hands] Good job.

or

Elan Sleazebaggano: You wanna buy some death sticks?
Obi-Wan: You don't want to sell me death sticks.
Elan Sleazebaggano: I don't want to sell you death sticks.
Obi-Wan: You want to go home and rethink your life.
Elan Sleazebaggano: I want to go home and rethink my life.

I could continue all night...
